Otyg – Tihutöitä is a playful intervention combining traditional handicraft and the public space. In a bus on line 105 daily commuters are confronted with knitted and crocheted pieces of varying sizes. The exhibition at Aralis gallery consists of a photographic documentation of the works.
The project is based on so-called yarn bombing, a form of street art where a piece of knitting is attached around a lamp post or similar construction. This knitted graffiti evokes the sphere of the traditionally feminine, yet at the same time it is strangely out of place. Unlike most knitting they also lack a function. By concentrating seve-
ral works to one site I aim to take the art form a step further and for my part make visible what it stands for.
The project is part of my master’s thesis in art education. In the written part I examine yarn bombing in a theoretical context. Otyg is Swedish for mischief and a pun on the word for textile.
